Daniel O'Neill, MS, MHC-LP

(He/Him/His)

Daniel O’Neill, MS, MHC-LP is a NYS Mental Health Counselor (Limited Permit) with a Master’s degree in Mental Health Counseling from SUNY Oswego and a Bachelor’s degree in Psychology from SUNY Cortland. Drawing from person-centered and other humanistic perspectives, Dan approaches therapy with the deep belief that we are all the authors of our own stories.

Dan views the counseling relationship as a collaborative partnership! One where the client leads the way and the counselor serves as an ally, with the most important aspect being the ability to act as a reflective mirror, and a conduit for gaining new perspective. Dan creates a space that is entirely centered on the client’s needs, experiences, and goals. While setting goals is a part of the journey, Dan believes that meaningful change and deeper understanding are often the most powerful outcomes of the therapeutic process.

Dan brings clinical experience from his work in an outpatient setting, where he has supported individuals navigating a wide array of mental health challenges, including anxiety, depression, trauma, grief, relational difficulties, and other mental health challenges. Dan finds genuine fulfillment in working with diverse populations and believes that every person’s story deserves to be met with empathy and respect.

With a lifelong background in sports, Dan has a particular interest in supporting athletes and former athletes as they manage identity shifts, performance pressures, or transitions due to injury. Having faced injuries himself, he understands the emotional and psychological toll they can take. Dan also recognizes that many responses are rooted in adaptive mechanisms and the ability to create change comes from the ability to gain insight.

Clients working with Dan can expect a warm, open, and supportive environment where their story matters, where they are given the autonomy to rewrite and retell their story, and where healing and growth are always within reach.
