Katie Grudens, MA, MHC-LP

(She/Her/Hers)

Dr. Fallon’s Practice is thrilled to welcome Katie Grudens, MA, MHC-LP to the team! Katie is a New York State Mental Health Counselor (Limited Permit) who received her MA in Counseling for Mental Health and Wellness from New York University where she maintained a position in Psi Chi, the International Honor Society in Psychology, as well as a 4.0 GPA throughout her time there. Before beginning her graduate studies, Katie attended Ithaca College where she received a BS in Integrated Marketing and Communication with minors in Deaf Studies and Writing. Katie has also previously volunteered as a crisis counselor for Crisis Text Line, a virtual nonprofit specializing in de-escalating folx in distress, and she has published poetry and personal essays in several online and print literary journals and literary collections.

Prior to joining the team at Dr. Fallon’s Practice, Katie worked at rape crisis centers educating professionals, healthcare workers, students, and community members on abuse support and prevention. Through her work at these nonprofits, Katie was also able to spread information and awareness about how to identify various forms of abuse as well as how to support and empower survivors.

Years later, after completing her counseling degree and clinical internship through NYU, Katie utilizes a blend of all her professional and academic experiences to help clients in individual and group settings. Katie approaches her work through a trauma-informed and LGBTQIA+-affirming lens. She takes an integrative approach with all clients because she strongly believes that there is no "one size fits all" method of therapy. Instead, Katie likes to get to know each client and build a strong relationship with them to best inform her "recipe" of therapy.

Typically, Katie pulls tools and techniques from various therapeutic modalities including internal family systems, dialectical behavior therapy (DBT), cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), psychodynamic therapy, strengths-based and client-centered approaches, while maintaining an empathetic, validating, and nonjudgmental stance. Katie believes therapy should be collaborative in nature and she is very flexible on the structure of care for each client, depending on what works for them. For instance, she has allowed past clients to draw while in therapy, she has given homework to clients at their request, and she has started client sessions with meditations and music to help set a relaxing tone for some hard conversations.

Katie prioritizes meeting her clients where they are and she views them from a holistic perspective that sees them as whole human beings, and not just their symptoms or presenting concerns. Katie is experienced in helping clients who present with anxiety, depression, trauma, grief, life transitions, self-esteem issues, identity issues, women and LGBTQIA+ issues, and family and relationship conflicts (including difficulties as a multiple). Katie is an identical twin herself and understands how difficult being a multiple can be, while also understanding that every client is the expert in their own life!

Katie is committed to seeking out new resources and training so that she can remain up-to-date on what tools are available to help her clients navigate what they have on their plates. When she isn't in an educational seminar or in a client session, Katie enjoys nature, listening to music, being a "foodie", spending time with loved ones, and doing some creative writing. Her message to anyone who is interested in therapy: YOU DESERVE IT and I am so incredibly proud of you for putting yourself first.
