Get to know more about Sargam
Sargam Mitra, MA, Ed.M., holds dual master’s degrees in Counseling Psychology from Teachers College, Columbia University. She also earned a Postgraduate Diploma (PGD) and a Bachelor of Science in Psychology from Ashoka University in India. Her clinical training has included supporting young adults navigating concerns such as anxiety, depression, relationship challenges, life transitions, and questions of identity and self-understanding.
Originally from India and trained in New York, Sargam brings a multicultural perspective to her work and is passionate about supporting immigrants, international students, and individuals from diverse racial, ethnic, and cultural backgrounds. Before becoming a therapist, she spent many years immersed in the performing arts, including music, dance, and theatre. Her creative background continues to shape her understanding of the human experience and appreciation for the many ways people express, conceal, and make sense of their emotions.
What should a new client know about working with you?
Sargam believes therapy is one of the few spaces where people do not need to have everything figured out or explain themselves perfectly. She views it as a collaborative process grounded in curiosity, authenticity, and genuine human connection. She has a particular interest in working with relationship challenges, attachment patterns, relational trauma, and difficulties managing emotions. In the therapy room, she is warm, transparent, and genuinely curious, bringing both compassion and thoughtful challenge to the work. Her goal is not to tell clients who they should become, but to help them better understand themselves within the context of their lived experiences and move toward lives that feel aligned with their values.
Process for Working With Clients
Sargam prioritizes building a strong, trusting therapeutic relationship where clients feel safe, understood, and supported in exploring their thoughts and feelings openly. She draws primarily from relational psychodynamic and behavioral therapies, including Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), and Rational Emotive Behavior Therapy (REBT). While grounded in these approaches, she values creativity and flexibility, tailoring the process to each person's goals, needs, and cultural context rather than following a single fixed method.
Sargam’s approach involves exploring patterns in thoughts, emotions, relationships, and ways of coping that may be contributing to present-day difficulties. She pays attention to how past experiences continue to shape how clients relate to themselves and others. Alongside this deeper work, she integrates practical tools and strategies when appropriate to support coping and emotional well-being.
